Thread Location: Drake's Flower Shop
Premise: Dinah's mom asked her to babysit the flower shop while she ran an important errand. Dinah reluctantly agreed and expects boredom to ensue.
When angry, Drake women were formidable adversaries. When there were two of them? It was best to just stay clear, “Dinah, I asked you to be here at two.”
Dinah let out an exaggerated sigh. She’d barely walked through the front door and already her mother was nagging. Her heeled boots thudded on the floor as she made her way past the myriad of premade floral arrangements and lifted the trap door like flap in the countertop to behind the store’s front counter. Drake’s Flower Shop had been run by her parents since before she was born. Dinah had fond memories spending hours there just admiring the flowers and eventually helping her parents with orders and even assisting with running the shop.
Things had been different ever since her father died. Her mom had closed herself off and thrown herself into the shop and work. Things hadn’t improved when Dinah had started working with the League. Really, they got worse. While Dinah felt like she was following in her mother’s footsteps and had found her purpose, her mother had preferred she do something else with her life rather than risking her neck with the League. It was hard dealing with this rift with her mother- so Dinah opted to NOT deal with it and chose the “evasion” tactic. Following the Dinah Drake Lance strategy of throwing herself into work, Dinah spent her free time at the Watchtower or on League missions, or just letting off some steam taking down some petty street criminals. Definitely easier than trying to mend the shaky fences between her and her mother.
“Mom I got caught up. I left you a message.” Dinah responded petulantly, shimmying out of her jacket and hanging it on a hook in the back.
“Caught up with League business I assume,” Her mother accused irritably. She sighed, “Dinah I don’t ask you for help very often but when I do I expect you to be here!”
“What I’m here now!” Dinah said pulling on one of the shop’s aprons.
Her mother moved to retrieve her own jacket and looked up at the clock as she slipped it on, “If I leave now I might make it on time. You sure you’ve got this? I can just close the shop for the day and lose the money.”
“I got it. Get going already.” Dinah said waving her off.
Dinah strode up to the front and leaned unceremoniously against the counter, plopping her elbows on the glass display while her mother headed toward the back door out of the store.
Dinah heard the door open but it didn’t close as quickly as she expected. Instead she heard her mother call out, “I love you.”
“Yeah yeah, you too.” Dinah said mechanically her mind already contemplating exactly how bored she was going to be at the end of this three hour torture and how she could sneak out without further confrontation with her mother.
