More than anything Thawne missed the lightning. He sat at his desk surrounded by laboratory equipment and the quiet hum of his computer. Every second that ticked by felt like agonizing pain- he wanted to get out of the office and just run, be free-- but unfortunately, now freedom came with a price.
He wore his white STAR Labs coat with the ID on his chest that read 'Dr. Harrison Wells' a fake identity Thawne had created when he first arrived in Central City several years ago. He had built an entire life for Wells using his knowledge of physics and the Speed Force from the 25th century-- he distilled facts and theories from the future into small portion sized 'breakthrough discoveries' that had given him much notoriety in his field and lead to him being one of the lead researchers at the Central City STAR Labs headquarters. Under the coat, Thawne wore a two-piece brown suit, with a yellow buttoned-down shirt and red tie. On the middle finger of his right hand was the golden ring with the inverted Flash logo emblazoned upon it, Thawne never went anywhere without that ring. His blonde hair was trimmed short and neat and he sat in the chair with his arms placed on the rests on either side-- his eyes were closed and he was sitting perfectly still.
He could feel the thing before he could see it. The electrical charge of the ozone suddenly spiked causing the hairs on the back of his neck to stand on end. He heard the crackle of Speed Force energy surrounding his lab as a black shadow formed on the far side of the room.
The Black Flash-- the manifestation of the Speed's force version of Death stood before Thawne, it was hunting him. The Speed Force had a unique relationship with time and it demanded equilibrium, a delicate balance that Thawne had disrupted with his meddling in the time stream. Thawne was the center of a paradoxical fork in the temporal road and the Black Flash was here to remove the obstruction by killing Thawne.
It was like a walking corpse, the jaw barely held on by strings of tendons as it made growling predatory sounds from inside its throat. The costume looked much like the Flash except it was solid black with red lightning trim, not all that different from Thawne's own costume.
The creature looked from side to side and began zipping through the room, smelling things that Thawne had touched as it tried to find him-- even though Thawne sat in the middle of the room the creature did not see him...but it could sense the Negative Speed Force in his body. So long as Thawne could suppress his speed he was safe.
The Black Flash appeared directly behind Thawne's left shoulder. It leaned in close to his ear and Thawne could feel its warm breath against the soft flesh of his neck as it 'sniffed' the air trying to sense Thawne through their shared connection to the Speed Force. A bead of sweat dripped down Thawne's temple he could hear the rotten wet sounds of the creature's mouth as it clicked its teeth together-- it knew he was close and it was eager to feed.
There was a knock at the door before it swung open and the young female intern with white hair walked into the room. She was young, innocent, full of potential, and eager to learn from Dr. Wells.
"I'm here to remind you of your 3:30 appointment, Dr. Wells... which is on the roof apparently?" She spoke out loud as she placed documents from lab results on the desk of Dr. Wells. She seemed confused about the meetings locations considering they had excellent hub rooms available throughout the facility. Thawne slowly opened his eyes and looked at her still feeling the energy of the Black Flash closing in on him as he forced a smile on his face.
"Thank you, Caitlin. Yes that is correct, the roof. I'll head up in a moment." Thawne tried to look relaxed as best as he could. There was no indication from the young girl that she was in any way aware of what was happening-- she couldn't see the Black Flash, of course, she couldn't-- she had no connection to the Speed Force.
"Are you ok Dr. Wells? Would you like me to get you some coffee or something?" She looked concerned, Caitlin could tell something wasn't quite right. She reached her hand down and placed it on the back of Thawnes as a caring gesture.
The Black Flash howled in frustration and with a sudden explosion of lighting and thunder it disappeared. Thawne could see the hair on Caitlin blowing as if caught in a light breeze as she tucked a stray strand of snow-white hair behind her ear-- the only indication she had noticed anything at all.
"No, that won't be necessary thank you.' Thawne stood up and straightened his tie and cleared his throat. Relief washed over his body the creature was gone-- its appearances were growing more and more frequent and Thawne was growing concerned that simply repressing his powers may not be enough to keep hiding for much longer.
Excusing himself from the room Thawne made his way upstairs to the security access door for the roof. He practically kicked the door open as he went outside and took a deep relaxing breath of fresh air. He scanned the sky quickly to see if his visitor had arrived yet and checked his watch. Confident he was alone he placed his hands on his hips and closed his eyes, once again focusing on his breathing. Thawne's nerves were still rattled from the encounter he just had in his office.
"This has to stop..." He whispered to himself, determined to find a way to get rid of this phantom and use his powers to their full potential once again.
