Powers, Abilities, Skills, Strengths |
Acrobatics + Agility - First and foremost, Nightwing is an acrobat. He's spent his whole life honing and loving the craft. He is incomparably agile, swift and coordinated and has stunning coordination, balance and flexibility. Nightwing is known to throw Olympic-level feats of gymnastics, tumbling and contortion into his free-running/parkour while traversing modern landscapes, as well as in his hand-to-hand combat style. Martial Arts - Dick has trained in a large variety of martial arts including, but not limited to judo, karate, kung-fu, krav maga, ninjutsu, capoeira and aikido. He blends these different forms together, chaining them with his acrobatic prowess, to fight in a way distinct to him. Nightwing can take on multiple opponents simultaneously with ease and even contend with armed foes using his hand-to-hand skill. Covert Operations - As a protege of the Batman, Nightwing was honed to a razor edge in a wide variety of skills that enable him to work silently and with brutal efficiency. He's a skilled infiltrator, saboteur, strategist, tactician, computer hacker, actor, escapologist and investigator. Peak Human Conditioning - Nightwing works tirelessly to keep his physique in absolute best condition. Letting his flexibility, agility or strength diminish could spell disaster for him or innocent lives in the field. Gadgetry - Dick employs a lot of hi-tech gadgets while crime fighting that give him a significant edge. This includes "wingdings" (thrown projectiles), smoke pellets, a grappling gun and retractable membranous wings that allow him to glide by transforming his costume into a wingsuit. Nightwing knows how to perform maintenance on all of these, take them apart, build them from scratch, etc. Multilingualism - Nightwing is fluent in a variety of languages including English, German Russian and more. |
Weaknesses, Fatal Flaws |
Disenfranchised - Nightwing has ties with many Gotham vigilantes, obviously, but he's not part of any official team or group of do-gooders. His list of allies is limited. Prideful - One of Dick's more cornerstone points of hubris. This has played into some of his greatest interpersonal, emotional conflicts to date. Self-Reliant - Nightwing doesn't ask for help when he sometimes should, and has trouble admitting that he needs it. He's so self-sufficient he can make some foolish decisions that would be easily circumvented if he called for some backup. Hardware - While fighting crime Nightwing depends heavily on his hi-tech gadgetry. They are fallible, though and have a margin of fault. A piece of his equipment jamming or misfiring or operating incorrectly at the wrong time could be disastrous. Physiology - The other half of Dick's arsenal as Nightwing is the strength in his limbs, which are even more prone to betraying him than his gadgets. Not only can unfortunate things such as sprained muscles or pinched nerves occur, but overexertion, fatigue and exhaustion all factor in, too. Mortality - Not only is Dick a human, susceptible to disease, injury, illness, aging and death, but he has no immunity to many compounds that super criminals in his world use on a regular basis - Joker Toxin, Fear Gas, etc. |
Character History |
Dick was born into the Flying Graysons - a family troupe of acrobats that performed in Haley's Circus. He was raised in that environment, learning the tightrope and trapeze as soon as he could walk, and as a child became part of his parents's act. When Haley's Circus came to Gotham City the trapeze was sabotaged by a local criminal, Danny Zucco, to get back at Mr Haley, and in a tragic event witnessed by a full audience, as well as Dick, his parents died. Following this, Dick found that billionaire Bruce Wayne arranged to take legal guardianship of him. With Bruce always away on some business or another, Dick was left alone in the vast, empty Wayne Manor and grew more and more withdrawn. Ultimately he sneaked out to track down Danny Zucco on his own, but was caught in the process. He was rescued by Batman, who brought Dick to the Batcave and revealed his identity. Then began a rigorous and brutal period where Dick was trained by Bruce in all the skills needed for crime fighting, eventually debuting as Batman's costumed sidekick, Robin. He worked in that partnership with Bruce into adulthood, when he then divvied his time between costumed vigilantism and his college education. Approximately nine years after the death of his parents, Danny Zucco resurfaced in Gotham. Ignoring Bruce's express forbiddance, Robin sought him out alone, but resisted the urge for revenge and turned Zucco over to the authorities, sharing an emotional moment with Bruce. Dick graduated from Gotham State University with highest honors and found that a trust fund set up by Haley's Circus allowed him financial autonomy. Friction with Bruce built, until it was pushed over the edge when Dick discovered that Bruce knew Barbara Gordon, his college girlfriend, was Batgirl and hadn't told him. Dick renounced his mantle as Robin, cut ties with Bruce and spent the next several years traveling the world learning from various martial arts masters. After this pilgrimage, Dick returned to the States with a new costumed persona: Nightwing. He established a presence in Gotham City and, though his relationship with Batman and Batgirl was still strained and tense, he proved he was a self-sufficient and capable vigilante. Nightwing worked alongside the Bat-family in multiple cases, including run-in's with Catwoman, the Joker and the Mad Hatter. Dick grew particularly close to the new Robin, Tim Drake. That lead to him working less reluctantly with the Bat-family and finally reconciling with Bruce. Most recently, Dick left Gotham to set himself up in its sister city, Blüdhaven, where he has begun combatting the local crime which, if less colorful or "super" than Gotham, is just as corrupt and thorough. |

The lapping of seawater against the dock posts and the infrequent clatter of the marina's anchored boats bobbing in the rising tide were his background music for the night. Just about as stimulating as the item on the agenda for it, too. Nightwing was hidden on the top of a central mast of one of the larger boats present, keen eyes staring through the white lenses of his mask at the broader arena. Only the social elite of Blüdhaven had access to this particular spot to store their leisure vessels. Usually it was pretty lifeless at this time of night. Dick's attention continually drew back to a specific yacht - the only one whose belowdeck windows showed inner light. The mobster living there had allegedly been kicked out by his wife for one gross detail or another. Nightwing didn't know the validity of that story, circulating through the criminal underworld. He just had a feeling that, marriage in shambles or not, the creep's work schedule wouldn't lighten up. A lot of work to go through on a hunch, Nightwing thought to himself, shifting his position to relieve aching muscles. He lifted the pair of hi-tech binoculars he'd brought with and scanned the marina again for any new movement. Nothing. Dick hesitated, then slowly pulled the view of the binoculars up, so that they looked out over the waters of the harbor. There, in the distance, was the much wider, broader glow of Gotham City. Nightwing would almost put money on, if he chose to zoom in to the binocular's greatest ability, he'd even be able to pick up a particular spotlight shining onto the overcast skies. The cough of an engine cutting off interrupted him. Dick looked back down and saw a much smaller boat gliding through murky, reeking waters, bound for the yacht he'd been casing. Huh, Nightwing thought with a tight smirk. Good hunch. |
