Weaknesses, Fatal Flaws

Mortality - Though in peak physical condition Bruce Wayne is limited in that he is only a man and susceptible to mental manipulation, extensive injury, and death. Though the Batman is a thing of legend that strikes fear in the hearts of criminals everywhere inevitably in time the man behind the mask be it through accident, death, or the ravages of time itself will have to leave it all behind for someone else to pick up the crusade.
The One Rule - Batman only has one rule, one thing that separates him from the evil he fights. He will never take a life. Though this code has made him morally and ethically strong in many ways for some of his enemies and even some of his allies they see it as in inherent weakness that can and often is exploited. His obsessive need to preserve the lives of whoever he can has forced him to put himself in harms way many times and often serves as a moral dilemma and point of crisis for the Dark Knight especially in regards to certain clowns.
Paranoia - Intelligence comes with a price, Batman calculates all variables and makes choices based on logic and calculation. This makes personal relationships very difficult if not completely out of the question at times. Batman finds it very hard to trust people-- especially those with great power. Anyone he allows to get to close to him is a potential threat either to him directly, or as a liability that could be exploited by enemies, or manipulated for evil purposes. This often manifests in Batman developing several contingency plans that in passing others may consider morally questionable-- but there is a reason why for every Justice League mission the Utility Belt's third pouch on the left has lead lined shielding and a feint green glow inside.
Guilt - Batman's ultimate fear is not for his personal safety or even potential death instead, his fear is derived from guilt. No matter where he goes he can never escape his own conscience for the people he has failed to save, or for the friends he has had to bury. There are literal graveyards full of bodies killed by his greatest enemies because of his refusal to break that one simple rule...
Psychological Scarring - Bruce Wayne is still haunted by the death of his parents, the traumatic event that gave birth to the Batman at such a young developmental stage has left Bruce with a myriad of mental issues that he struggles with on a daily basis. Though he has learned to deal with the trauma long term at his weakest moments he is often plagued by thoughts of what could have been.
Overconfidence - Though one of the most formidable, strategic and deductive minds on the planet Batman is usually right, and he knows it. Usually. Batman's overconfidence has lead to him alienating others, not asking for help when he clearly needs it, or even potentially creating ethically questionable technology that could be used against him or others in the future.

Character History

The night Batman was born was the night Thomas and Martha Wayne were killed. Gunned down in Gotham City's infamous Crime Alley in front of their 8 year old son Bruce. Young Bruce was a fan of fictional masked vigilantes like his childhood hero the Grey Ghost, and he had convinced his family to take him to see a new movie, The Mark of Zorro! Crime had been on the rise in Gotham due to an economic down turn and the Cinema was in a rapidly growing worse part of town. It was an ill advised venture for people of their standing in society but they didn't want to let their little boy down. Thomas especially only saw the good in people and despite being a man of intelligence he never saw it coming.
Bruce remembers a scream, two shots-- and then his world was turned upside down.
It was days after the funeral before Bruce was able to talk again. Alfred Pennyworth the loyal servant of the Wayne family had taken him to the cemetery every day at the boys request, though Alfred worried it did him more harm than good to dwell on his grief. Bruce placed his small hand against the cold concrete carving of his Mother and Father's name and made a solemn vow.
He would dedicate his life to eliminating crime. He would ensure that what had happened to him and his family never had to happen to anyone else-- he would be just like his hero the Grey Ghost but in real life.
Bruce immersed himself in studying a wide variety of arts and sciences growing up. When he was old enough to travel he left Gotham behind to learn from some of the greatest masters in their fields, such as escape artistry from Zatara for three months. During that time Bruce became very close to his daughter Zatanna-- but his calling would ultimately drive them apart.
Next he would learn martial arts from Yoru-sensei in Japan staring his rival with disgraced ninja Kyodai Ken and then The Master in Nanda Parbat, then sciences from Nobel laureates, and so on, and so on he would continue to find the greatest teachers and hone his skills as a masterful crime fighter.
When Bruce returned to Gotham he assumed his inherited role as CEO of Wayne Enterprises to continue his parents legacy of making a better Gotham, while on the side he began using the resources the role afforded him to begin building his arsenal-- and after finding a cave full of bats on his property Bruce found the inspiration he needed to develop his crime fighting persona.
Bruce donned the mask of Batman for the first time and so began his war on crime.
Batman worked his way through the criminal underworld, striking fear at the heart of crime and creating a legend for himself. He found allies along the way with Police Commissioner Jim Gordon, Lucius Fox as acting head of Wayne Enterprises, Dr. Leslie Thompkins, Automotive Engineer Earl Cooper, and always at his side Alfred Pennyworth.
He faced down many criminals, growing stronger and more skilled at dismantling the criminal element that infested Gotham. But as his legend and notoriety as Batman grew so did the caliber of villain. The Joker, Two-Face, Penguin, Poision Ivy, their motivations and gimmicks growing more advanced and bizarre. International criminals like Bane, Ra's Al Ghul and his daughter Talia with whom he had a complicated relationship with, and Catwoman- well Selena Kyle was equally complicated.
Very early on in his career as Batman however Bruce met someone else. A boy like him who lost his parents to crime...
Bruce took Dick Grayson in as his ward after his parents were killed during a performance at Haley's Circus. Bruce saw echoes of his own pain in the the boy and he wanted to help him-- but he only knew one way how. He began training Dick to join his war effort. Bruce's harsh expectations and tough exterior often lead to friction between the two but in time they became family. Batman and Robin, the Dynamic Duo.
For years the two of them worked together even as Dick grew up and took more of a limited role in their partnership as he went away to college at Gotham State University with Bruce's blessing. It was during one of Dick's visits home that they first encountered Batgirl, a mysterious red haired crime fighter who had patterned herself after Batman.
Though Leary of this newcomer and not knowing if she could be entirely trusted Batman reluctantly agreed to let Batgirl operate in Gotham primarily for two reasons; First she had proven herself competent and inherently talented at crime fighting-- she had impressed Batman and that was no easy feat. Second whether he allowed it or not Batman knew she would continue to act as Batgirl and by keeping her in network he could keep her as safe as possible. Especially after Bruce had uncovered her secret identity as Barbera Gordon-- The daughter of his friend Commissioner Jim Gordon.
In retrospect that's is ultimately when it all went downhill.
Bruce out of respect for Barbara kept her identity secret from her father and her new college boyfriend Dick Grayson. When Bruce brought her in full time revealing himself as Batman without consulting Dick-- the Dynamic Duo had a disagreement.
Dick gave up his role as Robin and left the country. Bruce internalized his disappointment at the way things had gone and started to become darker, angrier, more vengeful. Even Batgirl and Alfred noticed he had become colder.
Some time had passed and during a confrontation with Two-Face Batman rescued a young Orphan named Tim Drake. Tim was a clever kid who had grown up on the streets of Gotham and he was inspired by Batman. In combination with his own rebellious nature, and taking advantage of an opportunity Drake stole the discarded Robin costume from the Batcave, ultimately taking up the mantle as the new Boy Wonder.
At the beginning of Tim's training Dick Grayson surprised everyone by returning to Gotham for a short time as Nightwing. Though the relationship was a bit tense at first and a struggle for everyone-- in time they found a way to work together again and reconcile to a certain extent.
Batman would later find himself in Metropolis on the trail of the Joker. Short on cash the Clown Prince of crime struck up a deal with Lex Luthor to kill Superman. Inevitably the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel had to clash and just barely managed to work together to foil the plot. After that Batman found himself working with more heroes like the young Static, the Demon Etrigan, and the strange Creeper. Batman was starting to go outside of his comfort zone it would seem but this was only the beginning.
Upon detecting a series of security breaches in Wayne Tech's deep-space monitoring network Batman uncovered a large scale alien invasion of Earth. Coming together with other heroes including Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, The Flash, and Martian Manhunter they managed to save the world from the alien threat.
Batman recognizing that this invasion or something like it could happen again required immediate action. The only answer in his mind was an elite team of Super Heroes. Batman using some resources from Wayne Enterprises disguised as a line item hidden in the aerospace R&D budget created the Watchtower. An orbital satellite and headquarters for the newly formed Justice League.
As one of the founding members of the Justice League Batman considered himself a 'part time' member of the team. His focus and priorities were always in Gotham. Often trusting the safety of the city to Robin, Batgirl, and occasionally Nightwing when his responsibilities to the league forced him to leave the city.
During his time with the Justice League, Batman's paranoia and distrust of others began to manifest after Superman was brainwashed by Darkseid, Batman began carrying a piece of Kryptonite he acquired from Lex Luthor in his belt regularly. However, since their first meeting years ago Batman had grown to respect the Man of Steel more and maybe even started to show a little bit of faith in the Kryptonian.
During the Thanagarian invasion of Earth, Batman was forced to reveal his identity to his teammates-- and to the lament of the Flash their identities to each other. Due to the invasion getting a solid foothold and making access to the Watchtower difficult Batman used the Batcave as a temporary meeting place. Once discovered by the invading force however Wayne Manor was extensively damaged in the ensuing conflict.
In a last ditch effort to end the Thanagarian threat and save the world Batman resolved to sacrifice himself along with the Watchtower. By piloting the Watchtower through the Earth's atmosphere and crashing into the Thanagarian's Hyperspace Bypass, a city-wide machine, he would prevent it from activating a wormhole that would destroy the planet.
After leading a small team to take back their space based headquarters Batman secretly trapped Martian Manhunter and the Flash in an escape pod and stoically expressed his gratitude for having known and served with them before he jettisoned them to safety.
As the Watchtower re-entered Earth's atmosphere the increasing friction and heat began tearing the satellite apart and ultimately proved too much for the Dark Knight's limited human endurance. Batman lost consciousness but managed to succeed in his plan to save the planet. Superman was able to rescue him just before the Watchtower destroyed the Bypass.
Hawkgirl having been revealed as a traitor resigned from the League, setting his sights on construction of a new Watchtower Batman and the remaining five other members of the League focused on rebuilding and expanding the roster of heroes on the team.

The darkness surrounded him as he focused on slow purposeful breathing. Normally this was his element, he was comfortable in the shadows and he felt as though at times they were a part of him- like somehow he had adopted the darkness and it in turn had accepted him. This was where he belonged- a creature of night.
It was rhetorical nonsense of course, he was all too human-- and he was very aware of his surroundings. This was not his city, this was not Gotham and he could hear hushed voices all around him whispering with anticipation. He was completely surrounded and he could feel his heart racing as the hairs on his skin grew ridged and stood on end. The instinct of flight or fight kicking in as every fiber of his being screamed for him to run because this... this was wrong.
This was his worst case scenario. The reason why he never wanted to be a part of any team, to have people that depended on him or worse that he in turn would come to rely on as much as he had. This is what being part of a team ultimately would lead to.
He was no stranger to sacrifice, death held little fear in his heart. He had been willing to give it all when he steered the Watchtower face first into a Thanagarian apocalypse machine. He had faced that moment with more confidence than this. His life was the least he could give, but this? This was a sacrifice of everything the Batman stood for. He would never do this for Clark, or Wally, Or John...
But this...this was for Diana. She was... what was she to him really? Complicated, of course. Like most of the women in his life but to have lead to this?
He grit his teeth and squeezed his gloved hands tightly as the anger at the situation welled up inside him dispelling his weaker human emotions. Diana needed him to make this sacrifice and he would never let her down.
From the silence came a loud mechanical thump as a spotlight sprung to life and focused it's beam on him. There was an audible gasp from around the room as Batman stood at the ready for what was to come. His cape swallowed his form like an opaque shadow against the light, he narrowed his eyes and tilted his head up. The long ears of his mask framing his face like the horns of a great demonic beast.
The sound of a piano playing somewhere in the distance flowed through the room reverberating with the sweet resonance of ivory as the Batman leaned toward the gleaming silver microphone before him.
"Am I blue? Am I blue? Ain’t these tears in my eyes telling you? The Batman sang with a rich deep baritone voice to the rhythm of the soft dulcet piano. "Am I blue? You'd be too if each plan that you had done fell through."
His mind wandered back to Gotham, to a case several years ago involving the Penguin. An attempted kidnapping of a singer a month long stake out in the Batmobile listening to this song again, and again. At first he hated the tune but overtime something about it just connected with him. Batman often caught himself humming the song when working on other cases when he noticed Alfred smirking at him from the corner of his eye.
"There was a time I was your only one, but now I'm the sad and lonely one. I'm a fool. I'm the only one..." Batman continued to sing, his eyes searching the crowd for Circe and Zatanna. Was this enough to break the spell? Could he stop now before it was too late?
