Pyrokinesis: Claire was born with the ability to generate and control heat and fire with her mind without tiring. Her flames can easily melt metal and start a wild blaze in moments.
Fire and Smoke Immunity/Fire absorption: Claire has shown no fear of her own flames and is able to walk around in them without fear of being burned or struggling with smoke inhalation. Claire can also reabsorb fire back into her own body. Flight: After Luthor joined Grodd's Secret Society of villains, he augmented many of the team's abilities including Claire's. After he manipulated her abilities, she gained the power to fly. Previously she could use her powers as a jet-like flame and propel herself up short distances. Thieving: After having fled her government captors, Claire was forced to live on the streets, stealing to make ends meet. She has two years experience acquiring goods to fence and likely still has those connections. Charismatic: Claire is extremely charismatic and sultry. She is a stereotypical picture of beauty and knows how to wield that to her advantage. |
Weaknesses, Fatal Flaws |
Oxygen: Like any fire her flame abilities need oxygen to generate. In an oxygen-deprived location like space her abilities would be rendered useless. If in a contained space she could burn up the oxygen and her abilities would also be rendered useless and she herself rendered unconscious. She was once contained in a cell of inert gas with a mask allowing her only enough oxygen to breath and not to start a fire. Flame Retardants: She was easily subdued by an industrial strength flame retardant foam that was used by the government to recapture her. Various strengths and types of fire extinguishing items would have varying effectiveness on her but would certainly affect her in some way. Water: Volcana is vulnerable to water and can be temporarily subdued if doused or submerged in large quantities. Temper/Ruthless: Claire has a lot of inner anger due to people she looked up to and respected ultimately betraying her and trying to control her due to her powers. She has little regard for her safety or the safety of others and generally uses her powers with abandon. She also has no qualms with killing people who have wronged her. Also, her temper can cause her to be sloppy in a fight. Underestimation: Whether it's an underestimation of her opponents or an overestimation of her own abilities, Claire sometimes ends up captured or in sticky situations because she doesn't act immediately. Finances: Claire has no job or money of her own. The only way she has to support herself is stealing and fencing the stolen goods. Trust: Claire's parents handed her over to the Paranormal Studies institute who then handed her over to the government who took control of her life all of them telling her to trust them. Claire has zero desire to let anyone control her ever again and is extremely skeptical of anyone claiming to help her or that they have her best interests at heart. |
Character History |
Claire was born with an aptitude for pyrokinesis. When Claire was a teenager, her parents sent her to the Center for Paranormal Studies to learn to control her power. However, as a government funded institute, said government took an interest in Claire and her abilities. They acquired her for a program called Project: Firestorm. They gave her the code name Volcana and began indoctrination, training her as a living weapon. Claire was finally sent out on an assassination mission but escaped and spent the following two years on the run trying to keep a low profile and evade her previous captors. Having no other way to survive, Claire resorted to stealing which is unfortunately when she caught the attention of Superman. As she attempted to acquire something of value for her fence, Donnie, so she could get out of town, Superman intercepted her. She eluded him and returned to Donnie with a gold ring but instead found Kurt waiting for her. Using a powerful flame retardant foam Kurt and the other agents subdued Claire and took her back into custody imprisoning her in a containment cell where her powers were rendered useless. They planned to sell her to a foreign country doing meta-genetic experiments to recoup some of the losses they'd suffered when she escaped them. Superman arrived then with the information that the funding for Project: Firestorm had been cut off years ago and this venture to capture and sell Claire was all Kurt's doing. The agents attacked Superman and in the chaos, Claire was freed and the place was ablaze in moments. She went after Kurt intending to punish him for what he had done to her. Superman tried to stop her but she unintentionally ignited some barrels of liquid hydrogen knocking her unconscious and likely killing Kurt. Instead of turning her in to the police, Superman deposited her on a secluded island and periodically brought her food and supplies. It turned out that the island life wasn't for her and Claire eventually she escaped her island "paradise" making her way back to Metropolis. She encountered Supergirl and was defeated. This time however, she was incarcerated. Sometime after that there was a mass break out and Claire along with Firefly attempted to escape but were intercepted. Green Lantern trapped them in a containment bubble and allowed Claire to burn up all the oxygen, rendering them unconscious before taken back into custody. After Superman was "killed" Claire once again escaped prison during a jailbreak and teamed up with a number of super villains ransacking the city including Kalibak, Livewire, Copperhead, and Star Sapphire. When the Justice League intervened, she once again was apprehended. Eventually Claire was freed again and joined up with Grodd's new team of super villains meant to rival the Justice League and their numbers. Though not generally a team player Claire welcomed the alliance. She finally had more back up on heists and somewhere to actually go without being pursued by the law or other super heroes. It felt like she finally had her life back. Things were further improved when Luthor joined the team and he began enhancing and augmenting the powers of her fellow teammates which is how she was granted the power of flight. Eventually Luthor staged a coup and took over the team and Claire remained loyal to him and the new incarnation. |

Escaping the real world and running away to some exotic island seems like a great idea on paper. Or when you're stuck in some humdrum pencil pushing office job. Really, it is pretty great for a few days. Weeks even. Particularly when you've got a handsome near invincible super hero dropping in on you regularly bringing you "gifts" and making sure all of your needs are met. ...well, most needs. He had proven uncooperative in some of her desired recreational activities. It was unfortunate to say the least. After a while what started as a fairly promising paradise opportunity became very redundant and boring, feeling more and more like the prison it was every day. Or at least it felt like a prison until she was actually in a prison. Returning to the mainland had not gone exactly as planned. Every jailbreak ended in failure with her back in an oxygen-less containment pod of some sort and Claire was more than a little tired of it. From the moment her power manifested themselves her life had never been her own. She'd been controlled and manipulated and shuttled from one place to another with everyone telling her how she needed to trust them and how this was going to be the best thing for her. All just lies so everyone could get what they wanted from her. Well as far as Clair was concerned, that was all done now. Joining a Secret Society of Villains hasn't exactly been on Claire's bucket list but when offered the opportunity she leaped at it. It wasn't the most ideal situation. That would require everyone minding their own damn business and stop trying to control and manipulate her to take advantage of her powers. Since that didn't seem likely to happen any time in the next century, this was the next best thing. Sure, she was still working for someone but she CHOSE this. And she had as much freedom as she was likely to ever get including a place to sleep where she wouldn't have to be compulsively looking over her shoulder. A full night's rest had done wonders for her beauty regiment. "Looks like he's here." Copperhead's slitted eyes glanced somewhere over her shoulder. Claire tilted her head just enough to see Grodd walking with Luthor, enthusiastically giving him the tour of their facility. Luthor looked less than impressed. "Grodd better up his sales pitch." She noted wryly. "You think he'll refuse?" Copperhead continued to observe the pair as they made their way across the room toward the main compound. "Maybe. But Grodd has a way of getting what he wants." Claire noted. She wasn't entirely sure how much she trusted Grodd or most of the others on this "team" yet there was nothing about her situation that wasn't an improvement to her life to this point. "So do you." Copperhead had turned his attention back to Claire and was looking at her expectantly. She quirked a smile, giving him an exaggerated sympathetic look, "Oh honey, no." She replied as if to a small child, putting her hand on the side of his face, "I've got enough snakes in my life already, thanks." |
Anything Else |
Claire was also shown to possess some kind of teleportation where she appeared in a blaze of fire in front of the government Agent Kurt but this was never seen again and unexplained how it would work so I am leaving this off her powers list until I can reconcile it somehow. |
