Weaknesses, Fatal Flaws |
"Fish Out of Water"- Land can be a bit dry. Aquaman knows this too well, for he can be out of the water at great lengths slowly deminishes Arthur's strength. Unfortunately this means that Arthur is more vulnerable the longer he is away from bodies of water. If injured however, the seawaters are capable of sustaining him. "A King's Burden"- Arthur's kingdom covers seventy percent of the Earth, which forces him to focus on the larger issues. He can't always help the aid to allies that are in need of assistance, for there are more dangerous threats that wait at the bottom of the oceans that he must face protecting us from! "Atlantean Pride"- When living in the oceans, you have a "benefit" to see how drastic that ecosystem changes due to the reckless behavior of your neighbors who live upon the surface. Arthur knows the truth of where the planet is heading and yet the surface dwellers do nothing or refuse to take responsibility. With these dreaded thoughts looming in his mind, Aquaman, unfortunately, has trouble cooperating with his fellow heroes who seem more concerned for the troubles above the waters. |
Character History |
Arthur Curry always had the feeling of being an outcast. Although being of nobel birth of Queen Atlanna and the wizard Atlan, his blonde hair was a sign of a bad omen to Atlantean culture, thus he was abondoned at Mercy Reef. However, the infant was found by a lighthouse keeper who took care of the child and gave him his own name, Arthur Curry. During his adolecents young Arthur soon learned that he could swim faster, hold his breath longer and poccess incredible strength unlike anybody he knew. One day, he returned home and found that his adoptive father had disappeared, so he set off on his own. Favoring the waters, Arthur eventually came upon the domed city of Atlantis and it soon came to be reveal that he was its rightful ruler. There were whispers across the seas that there was a man who swam in the oceans at great speeds with the creatures of the depths and would disappear without a trace, naming the figure Aquaman. Lex Luthor soon found out that this man was no myth. While testing his latest weaponry in international waters, which had unfortunately caused reckless damage to Atlantis. Arthur soon came to put a stop to the wreckage that Lex was causing. However, peaceful talks with Luthor led him to be captured and studied by a marine biologist. However, he was soon aided in an escape by Lois Lane and the two went back to the testing site to once again put an end to the destruction, this time with the help of his Atlantean forces and Superman. In the end, Aquaman parted ways leaving a warning. "Tell the Surface Dwellers to respect the sovereignty of my seas, or we'll return and finish what we've started... We'll be watching." From then on, Arthur focused more on preserving the safety of the boundaries of his kingdom. He stayed at Atlantis preparing for a war that he did not wish to be but a good king never seeks out war, but must always be ready for it. With his half-brother Orm as his Royal Advisor, they prepared the armies of Atlantis. Unfortunately, these actions only further the prejudices his people felt for the land dwellers. For Arthur though, there was time to also connect with his love and new wife, Mera. They had a son, Junior, who soon became a joy in Arthur and Mera's life. This only raised the importance of what they were trying to prevent. It wasn't until the submarine the Defiant made a course into Atlantean waters that the armies of Atlantis attacked and sank the ship. The Justice League responded to the Defiant's distress beacon, trying to rescue the crew. Arthur allowed them to recover the crewman, but the vessel remains at the bottom of the ocean. Superman, wishing to help his friend, encouraged that he takes his concerns to the World Assemble; Arthur remained skeptical. His military advisors pressured him to do what is necessary and wipe out the surface-dwellers with their hidden weapon that they have developed at the North Pole. But with the thought of his son weighing on his mind, Aquaman instead chose to do diplomacy and went to the World Assembly. This did not go too well, for he imposed a peace treaty that would have been a near-surrender. When his demands were declined, he stormed out of the building but was attacked by the hitman Deadshot. Arthur was rushed to the hospital but was in ICU. It was from this event that Orm stepping out of his brother's shadow, sieged the throne, and began retaliation against the surface-dwellers. The Justice League aided Aquaman with his recovery and also pieced together that whoever it was that paid for Arthur's assassination was from Atlantis! Rushing back to Atlantis, Arthur tried to establish order but Orm had convinced the military to usurp the throne. Arthur was chained to a reef near an underwater volcano with his infant son beside him. And as a true death sentence, Orm sent them plummeting towards the lave! Arthur managed to free his right hand but there was hardly enough time left. He could only focus on hearing the cries of his scared child, and there was only one thing to do, he used his belt buckle to sever his left hand, which he would later replace with his harpoon prosthetic. With the help of the Justice League, Arthur soon regained control of his army, and once defeating his brother, the kingdom as well. It was from these events that Arthur realized that his own prejudices only escalated what he feared putting his family and kingdom in peril. If he wanted a better world for his son, he needed to be the example. He would give aid to the Justice League whenever he could, but his first priority is always his kingdom. From then he has gone on many adventures with his fellow leaguers, from defeating an otherworldly god Icthultu, to even assisting the sorcerer Doctor Fate on many tasks that may be at hand sharing what Atlantean knowledge he can to the good doctor. |

As the waves crashed over the rocks of the harbor of Metropolis, Arthur sat upon in thought looking out at the horizon. There hasn't been too much time lately for him to have thoughts to himself, the kingdom never felt like it has ever had peace since Orm riled everyone to attack the surface. But Arthur knew he could not blame his brother on this fact. He knew in his heart that he had to take the blame of the war that came to be and even to activation of the Doomsday Thermal Reactor. The responsibility laid heavy on his mind, the guilt had been amounting up to where he could feel his Atlantean pride waning. 'I didn't always have this anger towards the people of the land...' Arthur thought as he began to skipping stones on the surface, torpedoing through the waves that attempted to halt his throws. 'I can remember a time where I was content with everyone I met, land or sea. In fact, the old man Arthur always seemed to be one of the best that humanity ever had to offer... although, it is strange how he disappeared.' Another stone skipped out of sight toward the horizon's setting sun. The sound of seagulls songs on high were occasionally interrupted by the blow of large ship horns entering the port harbor. 'I need to look back into that. That was way out of character for the Old Man to vanish like that... but there were other's like him that I had met in my journey across the seas. Sure! I may have changed a little when coming upon Atlantis, and having nobility being thrust upon me, but I still don't recall where my disdain for the surface dwellers is coming from!' Arthur placed his right hand on his harpoon hook, what would have been a warm hand to touchback was only cold cruel metal was the only thing that he could feel in his hand. 'It's not from the subjects of Atlantis, for many a time they have suggested to commence the first strike, but at every chance, I turned them down. Not for fear of war, but a part of me still wants to help the surface dwellers along with my people! And now look at me, still holding onto anger against people of the land!' As Arthur rose up in frustration with himself, he could hear a children laughing over the waters. A fishermen's boat was coming into the port, with its crew of three, a father taking his two kids out on a fishing trip. whether or not it was a good catch or not seemed to not matter for the children after catching a glimpse of a member of the Justice League. The kids started waving frantically to Arthur hoping to get his attention, their father soon joining in yelling "AHOY!" Pausing for a moment, Arthur could feel a smile stretching across his bearded face. He happily waved back with his right hand. After hearing cheers coming from the vessel, he felt a sigh of relief. "I'm not mad at the surface-dwellers. Many of them are trying their best just like any other Atlantean. My anger doesn't lie with them..." As dusk was setting in, Metropolis's lights started to glow in the night, and the highest skyscraper logo beamed out into the night sky. Arthur turned around to notice the giant L on top of the building and then felt his brow furrow. "Luthor!" he gritted through his teeth. "That is where my anger belongs with, people like Luthor! Who always think of themselves and have no remorse for the consequences that they bring! His attention was broken by the yelling off the fisherman's ship. The children were yelling bye to them as they were going into the docks. Arthur gladly gave them one more wave of friendship and turned away from the city. He slowly walked out into the waters feeling the ocean embracing him more and more at each footstep. 'I feel like I can think clearly now. Although I still hold mistrust for some, I need to be better about this for myself and Junior.' As he kicked off and propelled off toward Atlantis, 'I need to thank Mera for suggesting Metropolis as a place to contemplate. She always surprises me with how she knows where I need to seek clarity.' |
