Character Basics |
REAL NAME: Zatanna Zatara CODENAME: Zatanna AGE: Thirty-four OCCUPATION: Magician RANK: Meta Hero MARITAL STATUS: Single ALLIES: Justice League, Batman TEAM AFFILIATION(S): Justice League |
Powers, Abilities, Skills, Strengths |
Homo Magi - Zatanna is a homo magi: a type of human able to harness, control and channel mystical energies to fuel feats of sorcery. She can accomplish with her magic anything she can dream up, so long as she has the power required and the spell is allowed by the laws of magic. To pay homage to her father, John Zatara, Zatanna almost always uses logomancy (the art of speaking backwards) to cast her spells. In this manner, Zatanna states what she would like to happen backwards and her magic works to make that commandment reality. Mistress of Magic - Zatanna has studied the mystic arts intensely for much of her adult life. She has a vast amount of occult knowledge, experience and confidence in mystic matters. Prestidigitation - Although Zatanna is an actual sorceress, she's also spent years developing her skills as a stage magician, using sleight of hand and guile to become a famous stage act in her own right, power-free. She is especially accomplished at escapology and misdirection. Bilingualism - Zatanna is fluent in English and Italian. Although a quick spell can help her bridge the gap to any other language. |
Weaknesses, Fatal Flaws |
Oral Limitations - Zatanna is reliant on logomancy, usually paired with gestures of her hands to cast spells. Although she can use her powers without either, when unable to use one or the other, Zee is less precise/efficient in her casting. Mortality - Despite her vast powers, Zee is a mortal woman susceptible to disease, injury and death. Mystic Rules - Zatanna's magical abilities are impressive, but there are some things she cannot change. The laws that govern spellcraft (at least of a benevolent sort) apply to her. Magic cast by beings on another level of power (deities, for example) cannot be simply undone by her. Laws of Karma - Zatanna uses her magic in accordance with the laws of karma. Magic used for selfish purposes has a nasty habit of striking back at the user, so Zee tries only to use her powers to help others. |
Character History |
Zatanna grew up as the only child of single father John Zatara, a world-famous magician and escape artist. She trained in escapology and prestidigitation from an early age with him as her mentor. When she was a teenager, Zee joined her father on one of his tours, operating as his assistant. During this time, Zatanna met and befriended "John Smith," a young man who apprenticed under her father for roughly three months. Following her father's death, Zatanna became a celebrated and renowned stage magician in her own right, styling herself as the "Mistress of Magic." When a trick in Gotham City went awry, making it appear as though Zee had stolen a small fortune, the Batman intervened and together they cleared her name. Zatanna realized that the Batman was John Smith. Over the following years, Zatanna discovered that her family were real magicians capable of using magic. She delved into study and practice of the mystic arts, becoming as capable of genuine sorceress as she was a stage act - a career she kept going all the while. Zatanna also reconnected with the Batman, being entrusted with his secret identity along the way. Following the Thanagarian invasion on earth, Zee joined the Justice League when they began expanding their ranks. Although she still maintained her personal career, she was happy to assist where and when she was able, particularly regarding magical crisis. When Diana of Themyscira was transfigured into a swine by Circe, Zatanna teamed up with the Batman and managed to earn the Amazon's return to normal. Later, Zatanna was one of many magical practitioners within the League made inconsolable during Felix Faust's coup in Tartarus. Fortunately, she was cured when Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl sorted the matter. |

"Speaking as someone who's been there before on business: it's hotter than hell." Zatanna wiped her brow with the back of one hand, staring through the door of the coffee shop she'd just ducked into. She wasn't talking to anyone, actually. Just herself, but with the amount of heat and humidity smothering St Roch just then, she couldn't keep the thought from her lips any longer. At least hell had some kind of ambiance and pizzazz about it. This? This was worse. Stepping outside was like stepping into a sauna in the most filthy, least relaxing spa imaginable. Just being out in it - standing still, existing - and you'd start sweating. "If I were a more selfish magician, I'd change the forecast around here," Zee mused wistfully. Though, she guessed the locals would think it a very selfless thing to do, to make their life a little more bearable, temperature-wise. Zatanna ordered an iced tea from the shop she'd sought momentary refuge in (AC was a gift from the gods) and, before she was stupid enough to step back outside, paused by the exit to braid her hair in the hopes that it'd be more off her neck. The Mistress of Magic took a bracing breath, one hand clutching her drink, the other braced on the door to push it open. She knew this kind of humidity and heat. She knew that the sun setting - like it was about to - wouldn't do anything whatsoever to soothe it. "You'd better have a good reason for dragging me out in this," she muttered, and left the haven of the coffee shop with a pitiful whimper. The walk wasn't long by anyone's measurement, but each step felt like she was wading through soup. She longed to use her magic in some way to make things more endurable - transfigure her outfit, create a pocket of cold around her, even teleport to her destination - but she couldn't. Zatanna wouldn't risk causing any kind of trail, ripple, bloom or trace of her magic under the circumstances. Her contact's summons had been cryptic, but Zee knew that the poor magician who'd made it was, it seemed, bound by fate to only ever be mired in the worst facets of mysticism. Could be nothing. Hopefully it was. Zatanna wasn't counting on it, though. And if it was something, then moving in secret as long as possible was best on both of their ends. Magicians may have loved theatrics and being dramatic (the ones who claimed otherwise were the biggest showboats of them all), but they operated covertly for more reasons than just added mystique. Subtlety, precaution, smoke, mirrors: they could save your life just as easily as a defensive spell. By the time Zatanna was striding through the park that was her destination, her cup was full of nothing but ice, which was quickly melting. Her contact was just where they said they'd be, and Zee went to them directly, hopeful that the matrix of concealing enchantments she wove before coming would hold and deflect any would-be prying eyes. Zatanna dropped down onto the bench beside the other magician and unabashedly pressed the condensation-limned cup to her forehead. "Why does anyone live here?" she asked, not sure herself whether it was rhetorical or not. |
Anything Else |
- Zatanna is a vegetarian. - She is a direct descendant of Leonardo Da Vinci and related to Nostradamus, Alessandro Cagliostro, the noted alchemists Nicholas Flamel and Evan Fulcanelli, and Lord Arion of Atlantis. - She hates "oonce" music. |
