Talia ran the back of her forearm across her brow, wiping away some of the moisture that had accumulated. It was hot and humid out, but then, that was only to be expected in a tropical climate. The sun, barely above the horizon when she’d arrived that morning, had long since risen high in the sky. Brutally, its rays beat down on her and the rest of the team whenever they stepped outside or beyond the protective shade of the trees bordering the clearing. Meticulously she washed what looked to be simple plastic laundry baskets in varying colors, some in better condition than others. She did her best not to splash water on her khaki pants and button up uniform shirt with mild success. As she was finishing up when an Indonesian woman quite a few years older than Talia poked her head in.
“Talia, you come now.” The woman’s name was Annisa and she beckoned to Talia to join her outside.
::Almost finished.:: Talia nodded to her, attempting to get used to speaking the native language but the words feeling clunky and unfamiliar on her tongue. Talia had studied many languages over the years since her travels with her father took her all over the world but it was difficult to retain languages you didn’t use. Annisa was one of the few at the center that spoke any English and Talia was grateful for that. The other woman smiled and returned the nod, ducking back out of the room. Talia finished spraying out the final basket and toweled it off as best she could, placing it back on the floor with the others, then removed her gloves and washed her hands. Her hair had started to come loose from the knot she’d put it in and she reached to push any loose strands behind her ears as she made her way to the door.
The orangutan rescue and rehabilitation facility was a handful of small structures. Mostly a few simple huts used for food preparation, for the youngest ones to sleep, and the other more practical needs of the human caretakers. There were also various containment structures containing the sleeping cages of the older orangutans as well as larger cages containing injured larger orangutans too wild to be allowed out but unable to be released back into the wild.
Sticks and dried leaves crunched under Talia’s boots as she descended the few steps out of the small one room building and started to walk across the clearing to catch up with Annisa and the others. In the center of a clearing was something of a jungle gym made out of logs and plastic barrels, rope, and, sticks. Climbing and swinging all over it were a handful of baby orangutans making noises varying from happy and pleased to frustrated and grumpy. Most of the volunteers wore masks to prevent the spread of human germs to the infants and Talia was no exception. The mask covered the small smile pulling at the corner of her lips as she watched the babies play and learn. Talia stood back closer to the tree line, not wanting to disrupt the routine of the young animals or get in the way of the staff trying to do their job.
“Come, come.” Anissa said pleasantly, indicating Talia should join her closer to the group. Talia nodded again and tentatively approached the woman who was sitting on an oversized tree stump observing a few of the young apes, sitting down beside her. One of them seemed very upset that she couldn’t get her coconut to break open and let out a few pitiful cries. Finally, she turned and made her way over to where Annisa and Talia. The small creature clutching the coconut tightly to her.
::What’s the matter, Moki.:: Annisa said gently. As if she understood the orangutan started slamming the coconut on the ground which accomplished absolutely nothing but more frustrated noises. Oddly enough Moki walked directly to Talia instead of Annisa and held up the coconut. Talia felt her heart swell and break all at the same time. The little infant would have asked its mother for help with something like this and here, deprived of her, was seeking help her help. Looking to Annisa for permission, Talia slowly reached out to take the coconut from little Moki, and tried to clearly show her how to break it on the side sharp corner of the stump where she sat so she could try to learn and understand. Talia managed to get it cracked only a little and held it out to the baby orangutan. Moki stared at it for only a moment before taking it back and scrutinizing it. She clearly opted to just hit it on the ground again but this time it broke, most of the milk inside splashing around barely missing Talia. There was still enough inside for Moki to manage a drink and she plopped down on the ground in front of them to enjoy it.
Talia looked up at the sound of an approaching vehicle on the far side of the center. She was scheduled to attend a fundraiser for this very center later that evening and some of the donors had an option to come out and view the facility. Talia had come out a few days early because to completely vet the operation before she decided to donate. More than anything protecting the Earth and its precious ecosystem was her passion and she wanted to put her money where it would do the most good.
Her attention was pulled from the sound of the vehicle and back to the little creature at her feet. Moki had pushed herself back to her feet and toddled closer to Talia and Annisa, pulling herself up onto the stump and climbing into Talia’s lap, one arm hooked around the back of her neck as she continued to snack on her coconut. Talia hesitated, holding her arms out a little awkwardly but Annisa gently patted her on the arm reassuringly. Talia ever so carefully put her arms around Moki, cradling the attention seeking baby. She took in a deep breath and let it out, feeling her little hand gripping the back of her neck and just watching her munch away on her treat.
