He was having an internal tug-of-war.
Sleep was important, and keeping as much to a standard schedule as he could. Too important to knowingly, intentionally mess up when he had an alternative. But it wasn't often that Don felt a paper coming together as easily as it was that night.
Every few minutes his fingers would slow where they danced on the keys of his laptop. His eyes would slide reluctantly and timidly to the upper corner of the screen and the time that the clock there showed. Don would point out to himself that he really ought to call it for the night and turn in. The paper wasn't even due for a week.
Then his fingers would pick up pace as a new thought jumped into his head, or he meant to tie off the paragraph he was working on. Ironically enough, fate decided that he would do none of the above: either keep working on his assignment or hit the hay.
Don blinked confusedly at the first few chirps that interrupted his back-and-forth. When he realized what it was, he quickly grabbed the communicator and brought it up to his ear. "Dove reporting," he said. The Watchtower gave a few quick details, and asked if he was ready for dispatch.
He smiled faintly, saving the draft of his paper and closed his laptop. "Ready," he answered. Azure light from two different sources enveloped his body. Don murmured a choice, magical word and, by the time his feet touched the ground across the continental US, in a construction site in San Diego, California, he was decked head-to-toe in the uniform of Dove.
Don glanced sideways at the fading light from his backup. The Watchtower had mentioned he'd have some, but not who they'd be. Dove's eyes widened. "Black Canary," he said, a little stunned. She was definitely a few tiers up in terms of notoriety and esteem than Hawk and Dove. "Glad to be working with you."
