“What do you guys say we get something to eat? We hardly ever spend time together when we’re not working.”
“Sounds good to me. I’m tired of commissary food.”
“I’d like to Diana, but I’ve been away from Gotham too long.”
And so the tradition persisted. Every time Diana tried to push for a little “outside of work” socialization, Bruce always had an excuse. The conversation varied each time but the result never changed. This time was no different. Whatever his reasons, if Bruce didn't want to come, that was his choice.
It wasn’t Diana’s first time visiting the Daily Planet but the enormous lobby always struck her as such a grand open space for an office building. It never failed to be a bustling center of activity with people of all kinds. Guests wandering in looking lost until they noticed the check-in desk. Reporters rushing out the door with a crew hot on their ankles as they tried to be first on the scene of a breaking story. In some ways it reminded her of the Watchtower as it was now, always a social hub full of activity.
Diana sat in one of the chairs, attempting to disguise her height and not draw attention to herself unnecessarily. She was dressed in casual attire, foregoing her usual costume during this leisure time, save for her silver gauntlets which were obscured by the long sleeves of her blouse. Diana watched in silence as the hectic scenes played out in front of her. Her thoughts drifted to Themyscira and her quiet serene rides along the beach in the early morning. She thought of the Watchtower silent and peaceful as it had once been with just the seven of them. Remembering the times when she would stand quiet and vigilant at the massive windows and gazing out into the stars and down at the Earth she fought to protect. It was a glorious and beautiful sight. Something she never dreamed of seeing even in her impossible lifetime and she loved those still moments to just take it in. But things were different now. Mankind in general however never seemed to stop to take a breath to enjoy what they had for even a moment. Everything was constantly in motion and sometimes all Diana wanted was for everything to slow down and have peace even for just a few minutes.
Having lunch with Clark seemed such a normal “boring” thing to do when compared with the action and excitement the team regularly experienced, but Diana had been looking forward to it all day. Just the kind of pause in the happenings of the world that she craved. It was funny in a way, Diana had pushed J’onn to go off and find himself but now that he was gone, she longed for his return. She hadn’t realized how much he had been a part of her daily life and she missed him terribly. Their quiet talks and his stoic presence even when they just stood together in silence had always brought her comfort and peace. It was incredibly lonely without him. Clark was certainly not J’onn in that regard but that didn’t mean she enjoyed his company any less. Sitting back in her chair, Diana continued to scan the crowd for the familiar silhouette of her friend.
